"I HAVE VOTED AND REGISTERED MY VOTE….PINILI KONG LUMIPAD KAYSA SA DAANG MATUWID NA WALANG PATUTUNGUHAN.."

MY TWO CENTS WORTH

The Philippines is set yet again for another course in history.  As the elections draw near, it is still uncertain however, who will surely win the most coveted position in the government, AND who will be that person who would somehow change the course of the Philippine society towards a more progressive and happy future. Surveys generated and broadcasted thru the media, whether local or national; do not provide us a clear and concise answer who is this sole person the Filipino people wants to lead them for the next six years.

Anyway, let me ask you: What kind of person would you want to lead our country for the next six years?  Someone who has a pre-established credibility based from his predecessors? Or is it someone who has this attitude who deals everything as if it were business? How about a former action star that looks up the complicated politics of the country as if making a film? Or rather someone who would want to tend people as if they were sheep in a flock?

Most often than not, candidates campaigning during the elections would have platforms revolving around these:

Better standard of living by providing better education, health care, and generating jobs, alleviating the hapless situation of the impoverished, economy would fare better and of course, the all-time favorite WALANG KORUPSYON PAG AKO ANG NAKA-UPO. I was just wondering how someone would give us these. Traditional politicians would always promise the above, however failing to give us a clear resolve how they would do this. They would only give us the general, but they would never say to you the specific. Unfortunately for them, they do not see the real picture of these issues that should have been long solved, and unfortunately for us, we fall prey to their promises. Perhaps even most of us forget the time to think what the root causes of these issues are.

The problems about poverty, the economy, corruption, brain drain and jobs deficit can all be linked to insurgency and secessionist movements, and overpopulation. And why is that? Let’s take a look on insurgency and secessionist movement, for example. The country has been plagued by secessionism and insurgency for more than 60 years. Yes, not just from what you’ve read in your history books talking about 40 years (if ever your books tell you), but 60 years. It has been a long standing problem in the country that most of the past leaders have failed to oversee. I would like to commend on Erap’s All-out war against the Southern Philippines Secessionist Groups and PGMA’s bold move to eradicate Communist Insurgency by 2010. Though I never liked PGMA and I was never an Erap loyalist, but like what they did. Cory (may her soul rest in God’s hand) may have been a better president but her act of rescinding the Anti-Subversion Law tolerated the proliferation of insurgency in the country. These communists would have failed to create a legal front, a shield that would protect them from the clutches of law, thus, it would be easier to extinguish their blind idealism.

Communism would have been a better idea of course since it would like to create equality and doing for the greater good for the community and society, but the problem is, wresting authority from the duly designated body is an unlikely idea for a thought that proposes equality, peace and progress. A very sarcastic situation: some communist figures hold a position in the government. They aren’t pro-government so to speak, but they hold a very important seat, whether local or national. The truth of the matter is these communist figures, if not sympathizers, are themselves halting the progress or development of a locality. Instead of giving what is due to the people by extending the programs of development of the government, rather they would tap the resources for the benefit of these insurgents. As a result, would feel that the government doesn’t care for them and they are still standing under the umbrella of poverty. These acts result to corruption and poverty, and in the long run, also drowning the economy.

How about overpopulation? How can it affect our economy and how will it cause poverty? The standard of living of a country can be determined by how much the government can sustain its people by giving them basic needs—health care and sanitation services, and education—given its resources (land, food, water, and even wealth, etc). And, the more people you have, the larger is the consumption of resources. In the Philippine setting, our country has such limited amount of resources. With a population of nearly a hundred million and with such limited resources, most likely that these basic services are spread thin and wide among the populace. As a result, there are other sectors of society that are not being provided by such needs by the government, especially in the rural and far-flung areas and other marginalized sectors. The result is two-fold: it creates a steaming issue of poverty, and since it eats up most of our resources instead of allocating it to other productive investments, it thus would have a hazardous effect on our economy.

Perhaps it is not too late for us to realize this. God has indeed commanded us to go and multiply our kind, but I think He made us this intelligent to comprehend that we must also think of the consequences of having too many people in such a limited area and resources. I am a Catholic, and I abhor people who would resort to abortion, but I despise people all the more who that despite being poor, have more children more than they could afford given their lifestyle. I am pro-life, but I wouldn’t agree to the Church’s idea of advocating to use only the natural method of family planning. I am no doctor but I know the risks of using only the natural method. Moreover, people are either misinformed, or lacking the information about natural birth control. The use of contraception isn’t a problem. And it doesn’t contradict the commandment of the Lord Almighty to preserve life. It is rather an avenue to preserve life. Isn’t it wiser preventing unwanted pregnancies, abortion, and rapid population growth by advocating the use of condoms and other contraception, instead of humping like rabbits unmindful of the consequences of having a large population yet having so little assets? I think we have to wake up. Yes we could boast of having a large human resource, but human resource needs to be maintained before it can be utilized. In addition, most of the population is children—something that we could not use as of this moment since the fruit is not yet ripe.

Furthermore, the problem generated of having a large population does not only affect the economy but also ecology. With so many people around yet so little a space creates a problem about ecological footprint. Ecological footprint is the effect of an individual to the environment on how much he consumes resources given a certain place’s capability to sustain over a period of time. Do you think our lands could still support the booming population despite having such limited goods?

There is also the problem of migration and brain-drain. Both are different aspects but they are somehow linked. People would always seek greener pastures and as a result, they would have to move to a place which gives them better opportunity and better living. Poverty is rising; some of our fellows have migrated to other countries in search of better life. Along with those of our countrymen migrating, are their talents which should have been useful to us. We would have greatly benefited the employment of our teachers, nurses, doctors, and even scientists for our own good if not for the question of migration. We would have used most if their talents but because of the country’s impoverished situation, they have look for a better field to tread upon.

Aspiring leaders of this country should look at these issues. Instead of giving empty promises and shallow platforms, candidates, especially presidential candidates should linger more on issues concerning poverty, economy, brain-drain, jobs deficit, and perhaps the ecology. Moreover, they should focus more on the root causes as to why these had happened. The ones that I have mentioned are the root causes why our country is poor compared to our neighbors. Presidential bets should be issues-based, and rather not subjective, often throwing negative connotations against their rivals acting like childish brats in the hopes of gaining sympathy of the people. Act maturely Mister Aquino and Mister Villar. Surely you are adults but I think a 5th grader would have been smarter than you guys.

THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
• “Say you’ll share with me one love, one lifetime. Lead me, save me from my solitude. Say you want me with you, here beside you. Anywhere you go, let me go, too. Love me, that’s all I ask of you.”
• “Past the point of no return- no going back now. Our passion play has now at last begun. Past all thought of right or wrong. One final question. How long should we two wait, before we’re one? When will the blood begin to race? The sleeping bud burst into bloom? When will the flames at last consume us?

RUNAWAY BRIDE
• “Look. I guarantee there’ll be tough times. I guarantee that at some point, one or both of us is gonna want to get out of this thing. But, I also guarantee that if I don’t ask you to be mine, I’ll regret it for the rest of my life, because I know, in my heart, you’re the only one for me.”

SHALL WE DANCE
• “We need a witness to our lives. There’s a billion people on the planet….. I mean, what does any one life mean? But in a marriage, you’re promising to care about everything. The good things, the bad things, the terrible things, the mundane things….. all of it, all the time, every day. You’re saying ‘Your life will not go unnoticed because I will notice it. Your life will not go unwitnessed because I will be your witness’”.
• “The rumba is the vertical expression of a horizontal wish. You have to hold her like the skin on the thigh is your reason for living. Let her go, like your heart’s being ripped from your chest. Throw her back, like you’re going to have your way with her, right here on the dance floor. And then finish like she’s ruined you for life.”

SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE
• “Well, it was a million tiny little things that, when you add them all up, they meant that we were supposed to be together…..and I knew it. I knew it the very first time I touched her. It was like coming home…..only to no home I’d ever known. I was just taking her hand to help her out of a car and I knew. It was like…..magic.”

THE VILLAGE
• “The world moves for love. It kneels before it in awe.”
• The Wedding Date
• “…..I think I’d miss you even if we’d never met.”
• “The hardest part of love isn’t loving someone, but having the courage to let them love you back.”

HITCH
~”So how does it happen, great love? Nobody knows… but what I can tell you is that it happens in the blink of an eye. One moment you’re enjoying your life, and the next you’re wondering how you ever lived without them.”
~”Life is not the amount of breaths you take, it’s the moments that take your breath away.”

AND THE ONE I LOVE MOST IS:

WHEN HARRY MET SALLY
“I love that you get cold when it is 71 degrees out. I love that it takes you an hour and a half to order a sandwich. I love that you get a little crinkle in your nose when you’re looking at me like I’m nuts. I love that after I spend day with you, I can still smell your perfume on my clothes. And I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night. And it’s not because I’m lonely, and it’s not because it’s New Year’s Eve. I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”
